About the museum
The idea of a cathedral museum in Astorga dates back to 1889, during the episcopate of Grau. The museum opened on 14 April 1954, under Bishop Mérida Pérez, with two rooms: the Treasury Room (Sala del Tesoro) and the Santa Marina Room. Its first director was Canon Pedro Martínez Juárez. The building had previously been the cathedral school, library and archive.
Among the works it holds are several Hispano-Flemish panel paintings and an 18th-century painting by Giacquinto. The museum also keeps pieces of great artistic value from the cathedral and the diocese.
The first pages of the visitors' book bear the signature of Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, later Saint John XXIII, dated 24 July 1954, when he was Patriarch of Venice. Today tourist visits are combined with the cathedral and the cloister, on a single ticket.
