Museo Romano de Astorga

Archaeological museum of the ancient Asturica Augusta, housed above the Roman vaulted gallery known as the Ergástula.

Opening hoursAdmission €4

About the museum

In 1978 the historic centre of Astorga, surrounded by the late Roman city wall of the 4th century, was declared a historic-artistic complex, and since 1984 the plots of the old town have been systematically excavated. The Museo Romano was created to display these finds and opened in April 2000.

Its building rises above the Ergástula, a Roman vaulted gallery about 50 metres long, declared a National Historic Monument in 1951 and considered part of the monumental construction of the forum of Asturica Augusta. At the beginning of the 20th century it passed into private hands and its interior was divided into four parts, which the Town Council has been acquiring since 1985.

On the ground floor there is an audiovisual presentation on Astorga's Roman past, and the Ergástula itself can be visited. The permanent exhibition is organised in thirteen thematic blocks, from the geographical context and the roads to the Legion X Gemina, the city wall, the sewerage system, the forum, the baths and the houses of the city. Highlights include funerary stones of soldiers, augurs, slaves and freedmen, the Pompeian paintings discovered by José María Luengo, Roman coins, ceramics and jewellery.
