About the museum
The chocolate industry was very important in Astorga from the mid-19th century to the first third of the 20th century; in 1916 there were 41 manufacturers. The museum was born in 1994, when the trader José Luis López García displayed, in a warehouse he owned, the machinery, utensils and posters he had gathered. It was the first Spanish museum devoted to cocoa and chocolate. In the early 2000s the Town Council acquired the collection, and since 2005 the museum has been municipally owned.
In February 2015 it moved to its present home, a Modernist mansion built for the chocolate maker Magín Rubio, which served as a residence, warehouse and factory. The building, from the early 20th century, was designed by the architect Eduardo Sánchez Eznarriaga.
The route occupies nine rooms on two floors. It explains the production of cocoa and its arrival in Spain, the local chocolate tradition, and the making of chocolate both by hand and with machinery. It also shows utensils for preparing and consuming chocolate, lithographic stones and zinc printing plates with their prints, and a wide collection of advertising: adverts, labels, posters, collectible cards (cromos), calendars and packaging.
