About the museum

The Museo de Cerámica de l’Alcora opened in 1994 with the aim of recovering, exhibiting and publicising the ceramic heritage of the town. It belongs to the l’Alcora town council and today offers about 800 square metres of exhibition space, fully accessible, with almost 1,000 pieces spread over three permanent exhibitions: l’Alcora Ceramics, Popular Clay and Contemporary Ceramics.

The core of the collection is the production of the Royal Factory of the Count of Aranda, supplemented by a selection of 19th-century ceramic funerary plaques and by the work of the workshops and ceramicists who kept decorated ceramics in the l’Alcora style alive after the Civil War. For the room dedicated to the Royal Factory, loan agreements have been signed with museums such as the Museo de Cerámica de Barcelona, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Castellón and the Museo Nacional de Cerámica González Martí in Valencia, as well as with local private collections.

The Popular Clay section pays tribute to a local pottery tradition that goes back at least to the mid-16th century. It recreates the process of potters’ work, from the quarry to the kiln, with tools, clays and a kick wheel used by the Nomdedéu family from the late 19th century. The pieces are presented together with prints, original drawings, printing plates and brushes to explain the creative and technical process.
