About the museum
The museum occupies the basement of the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Ascensión, on the Plaza de España in Lucena del Cid. The church was begun in 1715 and consecrated in 1739. The museum is divided into two sections: religious art and local ethnography.
The sacred art section brings together a 15th-century altarpiece, measuring about 3.8 by 2.6 metres, whose upper panel is attributed to the so-called Master of the Miracle of Cologne. It also includes polychrome wooden sculptures and a 15th-century alabaster relief. The goldsmith work is the main attraction: a Gothic processional cross of around 1420–1440, a large ciborium of 1490, silver chrism containers (crismeras), a Vera Cruz of 1497, the reliquary of San Hermolao from the 16th century, and other reliquaries, among them that of San Vicente Ferrer, dated 1611.
The processional cross was dismantled during the Civil War of 1936, kept in a store in Castellón, and its pieces were reassembled towards the end of 1963. The ethnographic section shows agricultural and craft tools, furniture and household utensils.
