About the museum
The Museo Etnológico Municipal is located in the hermitage of the Mare de Déu de Gràcia, about two kilometres from the urban centre of Vila-real, on a promontory beside the Millars river. It was installed there after the building was restored in 1986.
The access staircase starts in a vaulted room that can be identified with the original hermitage. The whole site is decorated with dados of Renaissance and Baroque tilework from the palace of the Cucaló de Montull family, which stood in the centre of Vila-real until the mid-20th century.
The ethnology rooms bring together tools and utensils of local popular culture. Two smaller rooms recreate domestic settings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries (kitchen and bedroom), and a display case shows clothing from different periods. Another room traces the economic history of the Plana through pottery, from the Neolithic to the 19th century, with a collection of Gothic pottery. A room in the hermitage's choir is devoted to popular religious ethnology.
