About the museum
The castle of Onda, known as the castle of the 300 Towers, is a fortress of Muslim origin dating from the 10th century. Its name comes from a metaphor already recorded in the 13th century, which compared the number of its towers with the days of the year. It was held by El Cid Campeador, James I and the military orders of the Temple, the Hospital and Montesa, and was the scene of several wars, including occupation by Napoleonic troops. In the 20th century the Carmelite fathers used it as a school and a children's holiday colony.
The museum of local history and archaeology occupies the former Carmelite church within the enclosure. Its permanent exhibition shows the traces of the Iberian and Roman cultures in Onda, Islamic plasterwork from the town and various episodes of its history.
In the castle there are also archaeological remains of the 11th-century Islamic palace, and visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the town. In the reception building, the former Carmelite school, there is a tourist information point, toilets, a drinks service, a photographic exhibition on the historic quarter and a 3D virtual reconstruction of the castle and the town in the Middle Ages.
