About the museum

The Museo de la Ciencia de Valladolid opened in 2003. It is a municipal museum built in the Vistaverde area, on the banks of the Pisuerga river, where the former flour mill “El Palero” stood. Part of that industrial complex was preserved to house the permanent exhibition. The architectural ensemble is the work of Enrique de Teresa and Rafael Moneo, with collaborators, and was conceived to be seen in motion and as a symbol of the city’s modernity.

The building combines the ceramic and brick façade of the former factory, a tower, a large lobby that connects all the spaces, a temporary exhibition room with a green sawtooth roof, a white concrete cube housing the planetarium dome, and an auditorium. Across the river, the Casa del Río is linked to the museum by a footbridge and explains river ecosystems, especially that of the Pisuerga.

The permanent exhibition spreads its contents across several floors: the lobby displays the first Renault 4 CV made in Valladolid in 1953, alongside a Formula 1 car and fragments of the Villalbeto meteorite; after that come rooms on energy, the neuron, the nervous system and mathematics. Since its opening the museum has had its own accessibility plan, “Ciencia con diferencia”.
