About the museum
The Museo de Vélez-Málaga (MVVEL) opened in March 2017 in the former Hospital de San Juan de Dios, a 16th-century building in the historic centre which, according to tradition, was founded by the Catholic Monarchs in 1487. The building combines Renaissance and Mudéjar elements, with a large central courtyard in Mudéjar style, and it preserves the hospital chapel.
The municipal museum occupies about 1,500 square metres and permanently displays more than 800 archaeological pieces, documents, photographs, coins, textiles and ceramics related to the Axarquía and the province of Málaga.
The rooms follow a chronological order: Prehistory, the Phoenician period, the Iberian-Punic and Roman periods, the Andalusi Axarquía, the Early Modern period and the Enlightenment. The museum plans to continue expanding its holdings with contributions from private collections.
