About the museum

The Museo de la Semana Santa de Vélez-Málaga occupies the church of Santa María de la Encarnación, on the Calle Real de la Villa. The medieval church was built on the site of a former mosque after the Christian conquest of 1487 and retains Mudéjar features. Its wooden high altarpiece is attributed to Pedro de Moros, although part of the imagery was lost during the Civil War.

The route explains how Holy Week is lived in the town. It begins with an information lobby and an audiovisual room that conveys the atmosphere of the processions. It then shows how the town becomes a stage for the Passion and displays pieces of the brotherhoods' heritage, such as images, paintings, embroidery and goldsmith work.

Other rooms are dedicated to the traditional cuisine of these dates, with fish dishes, sweets, chickpea stews and torrijas, and to the historical origins of the celebration, which links the Jewish Passover with Christian Holy Week. The museum also has a space for temporary exhibitions, where floats (tronos) and other brotherhood pieces are presented.
