About the museum
The Museo Morisco de Sayalonga, in the Axarquía comarca, is a municipal cultural building that opened at the end of October 2006. The building has been a school, a town hall and a workshop for oleander crafts (artesanía de adelfas). After a refurbishment that respected its original structure, it now combines a rustic style with modern audiovisual media, and displays horseshoe arches, hand-carved doors and walls that evoke the Morisco world.
The Morisco theme was chosen for its great presence in the history of the Axarquía. Several rooms develop it: the Casa Morisca room recreates a typical dwelling, and the Pueblos Moriscos room recalls the vanished villages of the area, such as Carraspite, Competín, Vatahis or Rihana, known from historical sources and place names.
The museum also has an archaeological room with finds from the municipality, from the Bronze Age to the 20th century; a room with works by the local painter Adolfo Córdoba and the prizewinning entries of the Loquat Day competition; and another devoted to the loquat festival and its gastronomy. There are also rooms dedicated to the poet Manuel Fernández Mota, whose donation of books and magazines offers a free reading service and which houses the Municipal Historical Archive; to the historian Valentín Fernández Camacho; and to the flamenco singer “Niño de Almudena”, with a collection of posters from flamenco festivals and a recreated tablao (flamenco stage).
