About the museum
The Museo Arqueológico de Frigiliana (MAF) is housed in the Casa del Apero, a 17th-century building that once served the muleteers (arrieros) linked to the nearby Ingenio. After its restoration, the building brings together the museum, the municipal library, exhibition rooms and the tourist office.
The collection consists of materials found in the surroundings of Frigiliana. For years many pieces were in private hands, and their owners donated them to the municipality, so that they could be catalogued, conserved and displayed. The museum thanks the donations of around ten people and families.
The museum's narrative is based on the main sites in the municipal area: the Cueva de los Murciélagos (Neolithic and Chalcolithic), the settlement of Los Poyos del Molinillo (Bronze Age), the cremation tombs of Cerrillo de las Sombras (Iron Age) and El Fuerte, the hill where the Moriscos took refuge during the rebellion of 1568. Among the highlights are the skull of a Neolithic child, a flint blade, a Phoenician funerary urn with cremated remains and a bronze thimble with a Kufic inscription.
