About the museum
The Museo de la Huerta de Almàssera opened in 1999 as a museographic project on the farming way of life of the huerta of València. It arose from a joint initiative of Almàssera town council and the Conselleria de Agricultura, Pesca y Alimentación of the Generalitat.
The museum occupies a former 19th-century slaughterhouse, rehabilitated by the architect Joaquín Turán García, on the outskirts of the town and surrounded by fields; for this reason it presents itself as “la huerta dentro de la huerta” (the huerta within the huerta). It is an ethnological and botanical exhibition space, and it also aims to be a place for meeting, study and reflection on the huerta of València and the comarca of l’Horta Nord.
The collections bring together more than 600 pieces, of which more than 300 are permanently displayed in two side halls and a central courtyard that recreate the domestic and working environments of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The domestic hall is organised into four sections (the kitchen, the fire, childhood and religion), and the other hall brings together work tools and farming equipment. The museum also has a botanical collection and a garden.
