About the museum
The Museo Histórico de Belmez y del Territorio Minero is municipally owned and opened in 1998. It occupies the former granary of the town (pósito), which at other times also served as the municipal prison, on Calle Córdoba, next to the town hall. Its founding collections come largely from the excavation campaigns at the La Loba mine in Fuente Obejuna and from a major contribution of material from the Seminario Antonio Carbonell, to which pieces from private donors have been added.
The route is organised in three sections. The Coal Mining room brings together drill bits, miners' lamps, safety equipment and drilling and blasting tools, as well as photographs of miners from the late 19th century onwards. The Palaeontology room shows minerals and animal and plant fossils from the Belmez coal basin. On the upper floor, the Archaeology room presents pieces from the Middle Neolithic to the Roman period, with finds from sites such as Sierra Palacios, the Casas de Don Pedro dolmen, La Loba, La Gata and Casas Baratas.
The museum also works as a territorial museum: it presents the archaeological areas, pithead towers (castilletes de mina) and dolmens of the surroundings, some of which can be visited on arranged excursions.
