About the museum

The Museo Geológico Minero de Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo is municipally owned and, according to the Museums Directory, was founded in 1996. Its core is the collection gathered by Francisco Orden Palomino over his professional career in mineral prospecting, which he gave to the town. It is devoted to mineralogy, petrology, palaeontology and mining.

The museum is housed in the former La Yutera industrial hall, in the Polígono Industrial La Papelera, an emblematic building of the city's industrial heritage. It is attributed to the design office of Eiffel and dated 1908, and was built by the Sociedad Minera y Metalúrgica de Peñarroya. It follows the functionalist type of factory construction, with slender pillars and metal structures joined by rivets.

The exhibition includes prospecting tools, mineral analysis and separation equipment, crystal models and a systematic collection of nearly 700 minerals from the five continents. There are also rocks classified by origin and by ornamental use, minerals from the main Spanish and Andalusian deposits, fossils from different geological eras, and maps and models related to mining, such as that of an ore washing plant (lavadero de mineral).
