About the museum
The Museo del Pastor is a cultural institution of the Villaralto town council, created to protect, conserve and promote the ethnological heritage linked to shepherding in the Los Pedroches comarca, and especially in this municipality. It opened on 10 August 2006 and is permanently registered in the Andalusian Museums Register.
It is housed in a mid-19th-century house on Calle Buensuceso, near the parish church of San Pedro, restored between 2004 and 2005 without altering its original appearance. The project aimed to save one of the oldest houses in the village, recreate how Villaralto's shepherds lived and pay tribute to those who devoted their lives to this trade.
The rooms cover, among other topics, the geographical setting and history of the town, the evolution of shepherding from the Neolithic onwards, the Concejo de la Mesta and the Cañadas Reales (royal drove roads), shepherds' clothing, the tasks through the calendar, products derived from sheep, the work of the shearer, shepherds' art and folklore, and the animals that helped or threatened the shepherd.
