About the museum
The museum occupies El Piquete, the former church of the Assumption in Quinto, a Mudéjar-style church-fortress on the Cerro de la Corona. The building is owned by Quinto Town Council, which promoted the museum with the support of the Diputación de Zaragoza (provincial council) and CEDEMAR.
In spring 2011, an excavation in the central nave uncovered hundreds of burials made from the construction of the church until 1831; 1,061 people buried in the floor are documented. After it was deconsecrated, the church was used as a grain store in the 1960s and 1970s, and the passage of heavy vehicles caved in part of the floor and displaced many bodies from their coffins. About fifteen burials were exceptionally preserved, with clothing, footwear and coffins.
Work to adapt the building lasted from spring 2011 to spring 2018. The museum displays 15 naturally mummified bodies in the place where they were buried, and presents itself as the first mummy museum in Spain. It also exhibits funerary goods, ceramics and archaeological remains from the Iberian, Roman and Islamic periods found beneath the building.
