About the museum

The Centro de Historias de Zaragoza occupies the precinct of the former convent of San Agustín, later a barracks of the Military Intendancy, on the eastern edge of the old town, between the Plaza de San Agustín and Calle Asalto. Archaeological excavations on the site and its surroundings have uncovered remains of a Roman villa from the 1st century AD, an Islamic necropolis, the short-lived Franciscan convent and, from the 14th century onwards, the permanent settlement of the Augustinians, who built a Gothic cloister and, in the 16th century, a Mudéjar one.

After the 19th-century disentailment the convent became a barracks. The rehabilitation preserved the monumental façade of the former church, which still bears shrapnel marks from the fighting of the Sieges of Zaragoza, and recovered the north-western linear block and the Entrance Pavilion, under the direction of the architect José M.ª Ruiz. The result is the present cultural centre of the Zaragoza City Council.

The centre is conceived as a space for meeting and cultural experimentation. Its rooms (Primera Planta, Cripta, Espacio Tránsito and Espacio Ábside) host temporary exhibitions, and the building also has an assembly hall, classrooms, an audiovisual laboratory and the Origami Museum (EMOZ), which has its own entrance.
