About the museum
Origami has a long tradition in Zaragoza: records exist of a circle of paper folders as early as 1944. In 1978 the Grupo Zaragozano de Papiroflexia (Zaragoza Origami Group) was revived, and since then it has organized popular activities, such as the paper-aeroplane festivals of the 1980s and the presentation of a paper mantle to the Virgen del Pilar in 2007, as well as international meetings and exhibitions. The most important of these took place at the Centro de Historias in 2009, and from then on the idea of creating a European origami museum in the city became clear.
The Escuela-Museo de Origami de Zaragoza (EMOZ) is run by the Asociación Origami Zaragoza, a non-profit cultural association. It occupies the upper floor of the Centro de Historias, a building that follows the layout of the former convent church of San Agustín, of which the crypt and the Baroque façade with its bell tower, dating from the early 18th century, survive.
The collection has been built up through the friendships that group members have cultivated for more than sixty years with folders such as Akira Yoshizawa, Yoshihide Momotani, Eric Joisel or Vincent Floderer, through purchases and donations. The museum complements it with temporary exhibitions by international artists and, as a school, organizes courses, workshops and activities for members and enthusiasts.
