About the museum
The Carromato de Mijas, formerly known as the Carromato de Max, opened in May 1972 as an exhibition venture showing the collection assembled on his travels by Juan Elegido Millán, a hypnotist known professionally as Professor Max. The display opened with some 360 pieces.
After Professor Max's death in 1975, the museum passed to his heirs, who signed an agreement with Mijas Town Council for the council to manage it. In 1992 a general refurbishment replaced the old wooden and sheet-metal wagon that housed the collection with a masonry building modelled on the original, with better functionality and safety. The council has now handed the premises to AFESOL, a non-profit NGO that helps people with mental illness.
The collection is shown in a single room, in methacrylate spheres on a continuous counter, and many pieces come with magnifying glasses so that they can be seen properly. The miniatures are made from very ordinary materials, such as chalk, soap, pins, matches, toothpicks or breadcrumbs.
