About the museum

The Casa Museo de la Villa was created on the initiative of the Culture Department of Mijas Town Council during 1994 and 1995, and opened in June 1995 in the former town hall building on the Plaza de la Libertad. Its aim was to preserve the historical and ethnographic past of a predominantly agricultural village that changed radically with the tourist development of the Costa del Sol from the 1960s onwards.

Since then the contents have been expanded: in 1997 a room devoted to traditional baking was created (the Horno de la Villa), in 1999 the olive oil (mills) and wine (cellar) spaces were opened, and in the same year the exhibition was reorganised into the Sala Campo and the Sala Sierra.

The museum is local in scope and its contents focus on farm work, crafts and the processing of products in Mijas: ploughing, fishing, lime production, the use of esparto grass, honey, marble quarries, oil and wine. It also includes a replica of the room where Manuel Cortés Quero, known as El Topo de Mijas, was hidden for thirty years.
