About the museum
The church of San Millán in Oncala, in the province of Soria, is a Neoclassical church from the late 18th century, commissioned by Archbishop Juan Francisco Jiménez del Río, a native of Oncala. It has a Latin cross plan, a nave divided into five bays, a choir above a large arch and a dome with an octagonal base over the crossing; its interior is sober and unadorned.
The church houses a collection of 17th-century Flemish tapestries, which the same prelate donated to his birthplace. Eight of them belong to the series known as the Eucharistic Apotheosis, based on paintings by Rubens; the most notable are The Triumph of the Faith and The Triumph of the Eucharist. They bear the Brussels-Brabant mark (two Bs) and the mark of the weaver Frans van den Hecke (FVH), a Brussels master tapestry-maker, dean of the guild and tapestry-maker to the Court.
Visits are limited to the summer season; the rest of the year they must be arranged by telephone.
