About the museum
Numancia occupies the cerro de la Muela, in Garray (Soria), a strategic position above the ford of the Duero. The hill was first occupied between 2500 and 1600 BC, and in the 7th and 6th centuries BC a fortified hillfort of the castro culture was built there, which lasted until the 4th century BC, shortly before Celtiberian culture.
The Celtiberian city resisted Rome for years: in 153 BC it repelled an attack by the consul Quintus Fulvius Nobilior and, in 133 BC, Scipio Aemilianus surrounded the settlement with a wall and left the Numantines without supplies. The resistance of its inhabitants became a symbol of the struggle for freedom. A Roman city, of which some remains survive, was later built over the Celtiberian settlement.
Numancia is the most extensively excavated Celtiberian site and the one that has yielded the most information about this world, including the necropolis discovered recently. Modern excavations, the reconstruction of Celtiberian houses and a signposted route now make it possible to walk along the wall, the houses, the cistern and the city's quarters.
