Opening hoursAdmission €1

About the museum

The Museo Numantino grew out of the archaeological excavations at Numancia, which began in 1906, and since 1916 it has occupied a building paid for by the senator Ramón Benito Aceña and designed by Manuel Aníbal Álvarez. The pieces found at the site during the successive excavation campaigns gradually accumulated there.

Meanwhile, the Museo Provincial had been formed from the property gathered by the Commission of Monuments after the 19th-century disentailment (desamortización). As most of its pieces were Celtiberian, in 1932 it was renamed the Museo Celtibérico. In 1968 the collections of the two museums were administratively merged, giving rise to the present Museo Numantino de Soria.

The original building, with three naves joined by an entrance loggia, was extended in the 1980s with a three-storey transverse wing. A major renovation was completed in 1989, and today the museum offers around 2,000 m² of exhibition space spread over five rooms: the three on the ground floor trace the history of the province in chronological order, while the rooms on the upper floors are devoted to the Celtiberian section, which is adapted for blind visitors.

As the parent institution, the museum also manages the Monasterio de San Juan de Duero, the Ermita de San Baudelio de Berlanga and the museum-sites of Numancia, Ambrona and Tiermes.
