About the museum
The museum grew out of the collection of Jesús Gil Gibernau, a native of La Rioja, who gave his botijos to Toral de los Guzmanes Town Council to create a museum devoted to this vessel. It was installed inside the Palacio de los Guzmanes, a distinctive rammed-earth (tapial) building from the 13th century. In 1997 the collection entered the Guinness Book of Records with 2,000 pieces; today it approaches 3,000.
The pieces, which range from the 18th century to the present, come from all the provinces of Spain and allow shapes, colours, sizes and decorations to be compared. The types on display include trick botijos, priest's botijos, cooler botijos (nevera), bride's botijos, well botijos and anthropomorphic botijos. All of them share the opening for filling, the spout for drinking and the handle, and they receive different names depending on the area: barril, búcaro, cántir, piche, pipo or porrón, among others.
