About the museum
The museum is a tourism and culture initiative of the Valladolid Provincial Council. Its aim is to help people in the region learn more about bread, with its varieties, production processes and presence in other cultures, and to make the province's bread known beyond it. To this end the church of San Juan in Mayorga was completely restored, with the idea of revitalising the Tierra de Campos region; the complex is completed by a new building. It opened in 2009.
The visit begins on the third floor with a sensory journey through the world of cereals and goes down through the second floor, devoted to milling and the different types of mill. The first floor offers a historical route through breadmaking, ovens and breads, from the Neolithic to Egypt, Rome and the Middle Ages. The ground floor covers the culture of bread (proverbs, diet, religion) and has a bakery where pan de flama and pan candeal are made. Visitors can also take part in bread-making workshops.
