Museo del Cáñamo Roque Francisco Albert Lucas

Ethnological museum of Callosa de Segura on the cultivation and industry of hemp and on life in the huerta (irrigated market gardens), housed in the former slaughterhouse.

Opening hours

About the museum

The museum was founded in 1986 on the initiative of the Amigos del Patrimonio group and with donations from residents; its founder was Roque Francisco Albert Lucas. On 24 March 1994 it was recognised as a museum collection. In 2019 the Town Council awarded Albert Lucas the Medal of Merit for his cultural work, and the museum took his name. It occupies the former municipal slaughterhouse, designed in 1920 by the provincial architect Juan Vidal Ramos and the master builder Juan Huesca Jover.

The exhibition follows the full cycle of hemp. The agricultural phase presents the homes and work of the farmers and the stages of cultivation: preparing the soil, sowing, care, harvesting, transport to the retting pools (balsas), soaking (embalsado) and breaking (agramado). The industrial phase shows the processing of the fibre (scutching, hackling, baling and pressing), spinning, the making of ropes and nets, and the production of espadrilles and footwear.

The museum also holds the first machines and local traditions such as Partir la Vieja and the Cruces de Mayo, as well as cannabosis, the occupational disease that caused many deaths among workers, and the switch from natural to synthetic fibres.
