About the museum
The Museo del Cántaro is a project of Valoria la Buena Town Council, supported by the Junta de Castilla y León and the Diputación de Valladolid. It was made possible by Gabriel Calvo and Margarita Martínez, enthusiasts of traditional Spanish pottery, who donated their monographic collection of cántaros. It takes the water pitcher as its starting point for exploring the technique, history and anthropological aspects of pottery.
On the ground floor there are three spaces: a central room devoted to the cántaros of Castilla y León, with the different types and clays of each province; a room on the making process, with a reproduction of a Castilian potter's workshop (alfar) and a cross-section of a Hispano-Arabic kiln; and an interactive room on decoration, repair and bridal cántaros, next to an archaeology classroom. The upper floor brings together cántaros from the rest of the Iberian Peninsula, arranged by type, many of them from potteries that no longer exist.
