About the museum
The Museo del Comercio y la Industria grew out of the joint effort of citizens, traders and institutions in the city. Its most direct antecedents were the temporary exhibitions organised by the Official Chamber of Commerce in the mid-1990s, when the idea of a museum on the history of local trade and industry began to take shape. Promoted by Salamanca Town Council and the Chamber of Commerce, it opened its doors in early 2006 with the mission of recovering and preserving the memory of Salamancan economic, industrial and mercantile activity. It is run by the company Turismo, Comercio y Promoción Económica de Salamanca.
It is located in the former underground water tanks of El Rollo, with a capacity of 1,800 m³, built for the water supply system inaugurated in February 1886. That system worked for a little over twenty years, until an elevated concrete tank was built in the same area; it was demolished in 2002.
The permanent, interactive exhibition covers the story from Roman trade and the medieval resettlement to a recreation of the Central Food Market of the late 19th century, an apothecary's shop and a photography studio, and presents some of the province's most important industries. The collection “Los sonidos del ayer” (“The Sounds of Yesterday”) brings together some 400 old radio receivers.
