About the museum
The Filmoteca de Castilla y León is a public institution under the Department of Culture, Tourism and Sport of the Junta, created with the support of the Salamanca town council and the Diputación de Salamanca. It has been based in Salamanca since it opened on 18 March 1991. It is a public archive of photography, film and audiovisual media and a documentation and research centre. It holds some 300 photographic collections, a library and periodicals holdings of about 27,000 items, and more than 32,000 film and video documents.
The seat is the so-called Casa de las Viejas or Colegio de la Caridad, a 17th-century building whose chapel was consecrated in 1620. It has been an almshouse for widows and elderly women, a convent, an ice factory and the seat of the Fundación Salamanca, and the Diputación de Salamanca rehabilitated it in 1986.
Since 1998 the building has housed the permanent exhibition “Artilugios para fascinar”, a display of apparatus and images predating cinema, which brings together the collections of the filmmaker Basilio Martín Patino and of the photographers Luis González de la Huebra, Agustín Pazos, José Núñez Larraz and Ángel Esteban. Admission is free.
