About the museum
The Asociación Murciana de Amigos del Ferrocarril (AMAF) began to build its railway museum when it was reactivated in 1981. The collection grew over time until it became, according to the association, the most important railway museum in the Región de Murcia, with more than 1,600 catalogued pieces and documents.
The museum is on the Plaza de la Industria, next to Murcia del Carmen station, in a building ceded by Renfe. Its space is limited, so part of the holdings has been displayed in a makeshift way; the association has repeatedly asked the Ayuntamiento and other administrations for a larger venue, taking advantage of the works for the arrival of high-speed rail.
The route shows the development of rail transport in Murcia through objects, uniforms and caps, lamps, station furniture, photographs and model trains. A highlight is the collection of fully functional railway signals from different lines, which are operated from a signal box dating from 1908.
