About the museum

The Museo Ponce de León opened on 21 June 2017 in Santervás de Campos, a village in the Tierra de Campos where the navigator Juan Ponce de León was born in 1460. It occupies around 600 m² of a 17th-century building that was a convent of a Benedictine priory; beneath it a tunnel leading to the church of San Gervasio y San Protasio was found. In front of it stands a statue of the navigator.

The museum is monographic and designed like the altarpiece of a church: illustrated panels, based on the book “Retablo de Ponce de León” by Enrique Sánchez Goyanes, recount his life and the customs of the time. Its creator, Raúl Gómez, used the shape of the building to reproduce the prow of a ship and to recreate the deck and cabins with navigation instruments of the period. Several paintings show people from his circle, such as the Catholic Monarchs and Christopher Columbus.

Ponce de León took part in Columbus’s second voyage, was governor of Puerto Rico and in 1513 reached the coast of La Florida. The same building also houses the Museo de la Ruta Quetzal, devoted to Miguel de la Quadra-Salcedo, which can be visited with the same ticket.
