About the museum
The museum occupies the Casa de los Dávila, a mansion from the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the centre of Hervás, between the Plaza de González Fiori and the Plaza de la Corredera. The building has had various uses: as a house, as a military command post during the war and as a library. The Diputación de Cáceres (provincial council) restored it for museum use.
It opened on 25 October 1986, after the couple’s heirs, through Roger Lecourtier Morel, donated their sculptural and pictorial legacy to the Hervás town council. It is now managed by the Consorcio Museo Pérez Comendador-Leroux and forms part of the Red de Museos de Extremadura (Extremadura Museum Network).
The collection, of more than 600 works, brings together much of the sculpture of Enrique Pérez Comendador (Hervás, 1900 – Madrid, 1981), who trained in Seville in the tradition of religious imagery, and the painting of his wife, the French painter Magdalena Leroux (Paris, 1902 – Madrid, 1985), who depicted the cities they travelled through together. It is complemented by works by friends of the couple, such as Zuloaga and Eugenio Hermoso. The museum also has a temporary exhibition room, a library and a programme of courses and concerts.
