About the museum
The Museo Diocesano de Huesca was created in 1945 by decree of Bishop Lino Rodrigo. Its current layout was developed in five phases between 1997 and 2017, and it occupies around 955 m² in rooms adjoining the cathedral: the chapter house, the cloisters, the parish hall and the Salón del Tanto Monta. Outside worship hours, the cathedral and the museum are visited on a single route. The museum belongs to the Diocese of Huesca and the cathedral chapter.
The collections are of sacred art. They come mostly from the cathedral, but also from parishes and convents in the diocese. The rooms are devoted to goldsmith's work, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque art, and the Salón del Tanto Monta.
The Romanesque room occupies a 12th-century cloister built over the courtyard of the former congregational mosque and brings together mural painting removed from churches in the diocese, polychrome carvings and tombstones. The Gothic room, set in the unfinished cloister of Pope Luna, shows 15th-century panels such as the Coronation altarpiece, attributed to Pedro Zuera. The goldsmith's room preserves Romanesque caskets from Limoges, a predella by the silversmith Bartolomé Tutzó, and monstrances, chalices and processional crosses. The Salón del Tanto Monta, built in 1478 under Bishop Antonio Espés, preserves a painted late-medieval wooden ceiling and reopened in 2017 after restoration.
