About the museum
The museum occupies a former Guardia Civil barracks in the historic centre of Laxe, rehabilitated for this purpose. The stone building, with features of the traditional Galician house such as the fireplace, the wash-house and the latrine, is listed as being of high architectural interest and has four levels: ground floor, first floor, second floor and attic.
The museum focuses on the anthropological, historical and visual heritage of Laxe and of the comarcas of Bergantiños and Soneira from the late 19th century to the 1970s, with particular attention to seafaring culture and the preservation of local socio-cultural memory.
Its permanent collection revolves around the photographic archive of Plácido Vidal (1867–1956) and his son José María Vidal (1900–1988), with some 67,000 images documenting Laxe and much of the Costa da Morte over more than a century. All of them are digitised and kept in the Municipal Archive; on the ground floor, thematic selections are on display.
