About the museum
The Museo da Pesca occupies part of the San Carlos castle, an 18th-century fortification built to defend the area against attacks by English and French privateers. It opened its doors on 4 November 2006 and presents itself as an interpretation centre for fishing.
The exhibition covers traditional Galician fishing gear, such as French creels, rañas, poteras and tying needles, shipwright’s carpentry tools and models of gear such as the pincho del congrio and the xávegas. Thirteen information panels explain the history of Galician fishing, with topics such as traditional boats, whaling, shipwrecks and the tools of sailors.
