About the museum
The Museo de Bergantiños occupies the former prison of Carballo, an 1851 building that was the town's jail and is now one of its most emblematic buildings. Its restoration began in the late 1990s, directed by the architect Manuel Gallego Jorreto, and in 2002 it opened as an ethnographic museum.
The rooms are dedicated to the culture, history and customs of the Bergantiños comarca: its landscape, the farming tradition, the history of Carballo and, in one of them, the Costa da Morte. Bread, Carballo's flagship product, has a prominent place. The rooms listed on the Diputación's tourist website include the “Sala Lareira”, devoted to the hearth, and the “Sala Mar” (sea room).
In the central courtyard there are panels on the Carballo–A Coruña trolleybus line, the first electrified road line in Spain. The museum shares its building with the municipal tourist office and offers guided visits, mainly for school groups.
