About the museum

The school of Vega de Doña Olimpa, in the municipality of Saldaña, was built around 1953 as part of the programme of new school buildings of the period. It is a single-storey building of about 13 by 7 metres, with exposed brick walls and traditional gloria heating. It operated until the 1978-79 school year, when the pupils moved to the new district school centre in Saldaña, and the teaching material was left inside, abandoned.

The villagers decided to recover the building with European aid, repaired the surviving furniture and contributed books and notebooks that they had kept at home. The Escuela-Museo was opened on 12 May 2007, attended by the teacher who had taught there for fourteen years.

The classroom keeps its original layout: two rows of double desks with a central aisle, the teacher's table and the blackboard. Also on display are pen nibs, inkwells, notebooks, political and physical maps of Spain and of the world, prints of the human body and group photographs of the pupils.
