About the museum
The museum opened in 1992 in the single-teacher school of Vilar de Santos, with a first collection gathered in the comarca by a group of teachers and pupils from the Instituto de Xinzo de Limia. The Concello de Vilar de Santos later obtained the parish rectory, an 18th-century building that belonged to the Order of Santiago and served as a pilgrims' hospital, and restored it while keeping the original wood, stone, fireplace and courtyard. The museum reopened there in 1996 as a meeting place for the community.
Its six spaces show aspects of the traditional life of the Limia. The Limia room explains the society and economy of the comarca; the flax room, the process that turns plant fibre into cloth; and the trades room recreates stonemasonry, blacksmithing and carpentry workshops. Another room is devoted to the potato, for a long time the main source of income, and the house room recreates a kitchen and a bedroom with their furniture. In the courtyard, farming and livestock implements are displayed.
The museum has a working weaving workshop, a souvenir shop and a specialist library. Guided visits are led by retired people who explain the trades they once practised themselves.
