Museo Etnográfico de Quirós

Museum set on former iron-smelting blast furnaces, reproducing a Quirós farmhouse and showing the rural and mining life of the municipality.

Opening hoursAdmission €2.50

About the museum

The museum sits on the former San Salvador iron-smelting blast furnaces, a symbol of the industrialisation of the municipality of Quirós in the 19th century. Its narrative recalls the arrival of foreign companies, the building of the road, the blast furnaces and the railway, and the transformation of rural life through mining. Outside, a large retaining wall and the underground galleries that fed the furnaces have been preserved.

The route reproduces a two-storey house from Quirós. On the ground floor are the stables, a cider press (lagar) and the male woodworking trades, such as the clog maker (madreñero), carpenter and basket maker. The first floor shows the traditional home, family life and the female trades, such as laundress, cook, market trader and dressmaker. On the second floor a pilgrimage festival (romería) is recreated and musical instruments are displayed. Outside there is a hórreo (granary), a fountain, watering trough and washhouse, and a schoolhouse with traditional games such as la rana, la llave and el cascayo.
