Muséu Etnográficu de la Llechería

Ethnographic museum in Morcín on cattle, milk, butter and cheese in rural Asturian society.

Opening hoursAdmission €3

About the museum

The museum grew out of a proposal by the organising committee of the Quesu d’Afuega’l Pitu cheese contest in 1990. In 1993 Morcín town council and the Hermandad de La Probe set up the association “Amigos del Queso”, which began to search for and recover objects and carried out substantial research. That same year the museum opened its doors to gather, study and pass on the traditional knowledge and techniques of milk and its derivatives, as well as the related rural customs.

The museum is part of the Asturian Ethnographic Museums Network and occupies the former hoppers of the Monsacro mine shaft, at the coal loading point of that mine, an example of industrial archaeology. It is located in La Foz de Morcín, in the protected landscape of the Sierra del Aramo, about 15 km from Oviedo.

The collection brings together more than five hundred pieces, mostly from Asturian villages, organised into four sections: cattle, milk, butter and cheese. The route shows traditional butter-making methods, with leather bags (odres), earthenware jars (botijas) and firidoras, as well as various moulds, stamps and presses for cheeses. The museum also has an audiovisual room, a specialist library and a documentary archive. Since 1993 it has organised travelling exhibitions and two annual displays: one in January during the Quesu d’Afuega’l Pitu cheese contest and another in September during the fair of Asturian artisan cheese.
