About the museum
La Ponte-Ecomuséu is an ecomuseum and research centre in the Asturian municipality of Santo Adriano. It was founded on the initiative of people connected to the area and works on the history, archaeology and cultural heritage of the region as an open, experimental and collaborative space. Its base is at the Villa Tecnológica El Sabil in Villanueva, and the Asturias tourism portal notes that visits start from a traditional two-storey house at the foot of the Senda del Oso.
Instead of an exhibition hall, the ecomuseum offers cultural itineraries guided through the valley itself: the pre-Romanesque church of Santo Adriano de Tuñón, the caves with rock art, the rural village of Villanueva, the medieval heritage of the area and the iron mines of Castañeo del Monte. It also runs workshops on traditional Asturian crafts, talks, meetings and an annual conference on cultural heritage.
The project has received several awards: the Leading Culture Destinations award in 2016, the Hispania Nostra good practice award in 2019 and the Ibermuseos education award in 2025 for its cultural itineraries programme.
