About the museum

The Museo Etnográfico de Estepona is in the bullring complex, alongside other municipal museums such as the Taurino (bullfighting museum) and the Paleontológico (palaeontology museum). Its purpose is to show and disseminate the ways of life, customs and economy of the people of the Estepona area over recent centuries, and it holds more than 2,000 objects of ethnographic interest.

The exhibition is arranged in thematic rooms according to the function of the farm implements. The rural room groups together the farmhouse, beekeeping, sowing, reaping, threshing, the grain store, livestock and the forge. The seafaring room, or Museo del Mar, presents Estepona's close relationship with the sea through panels, interactive resources and audiovisuals, and houses the nautical collection of Miguel López Mateo.

The López Mateo collection includes navigation instruments, 19th-century diving equipment, models, rigging and fishing gear. The Museo del Mar has been completely renovated and reopened on 2 October 2026, with large display cases, panels on fishing, shipwright's carpentry (carpintería de ribera), canned food and seafaring traditions, three audiovisuals and an immersive room that recreates a posidonia (seagrass) meadow.
