About the museum
The Sala Arqueológica Municipal is located within the Centro Cultural Cortijo Miraflores, a former farmhouse built in 1706 as a country house in the Prado de San Francisco, to which a sugar mill and an olive oil mill were later added. The building acquired its present structure in the first half of the 19th century, ceased to belong to the owning family after 1886 and was bought by the Ayuntamiento de Marbella (town council) in 1990. Today it is a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest).
After its rehabilitation, the cortijo operates as a cultural centre and brings together exhibitions, the Archivo Histórico Municipal, a 19th-century olive oil mill with its machinery and the archaeological display. The exhibition occupies a main room and a room adjoining the olive oil mill.
The main room displays three models of large Roman and Late Roman sites in the municipality: the Roman villa of Río Verde, the Guadalmina baths and the early Christian basilica of Vega del Mar. Alongside them are a reconstructed Roman anchor stock, a ship's cannon, an Admiralty-type anchor, an amphora and a loophole from the castle of Marbella, as well as a display case on the Andalusian Neolithic with votive funerary grave goods from several caves.
The mill room holds six display cases and three explanatory panels that trace local history from the Lower Palaeolithic to the Early Modern period, with stone tools, Phoenician and Roman pottery, funerary urns, Islamic pottery and coins. The first display case is devoted to Roman-era underwater archaeology.
