About the museum
The museum originated in the 1950s, following the archaeological finds made by the G.A.M.A. group at the El Laderón site in the municipality of Doña Mencía. After several attempts to regularise the collection, in 1980 the academic and political authorities of the province accepted it, and by decree of the Junta de Andalucía it became the first open museum in the province of Córdoba. It opened in February 1981.
The museum occupies a space in the Casa de la Cultura “Juan Valera”. It brings together materials from more than three hundred sites in the province and the neighbouring area of Jaén. The visit is educational and chronological: it begins with remains from the Lower Palaeolithic and the Mousterian period, continues with the Epipalaeolithic and the Neolithic, and reaches the Phoenician, Greek, Iberian, Roman, Visigothic and Arab cultures.
Among the most significant pieces are a collection of Epipalaeolithic microblades in flint and bone, two limestone idols in the shape of double axes from El Laderón, a restored tomb in the Argaric tradition with its grave goods, and a Roman cippus with a road inscription. A numismatic collection of indigenous, Iberian-Roman, Roman and Arab coins is also on display.
