About the museum

The Fundación Aguilar y Eslava originates in the Real Colegio de la Purísima Concepción, a teaching centre that was set up in 1689 in a building in Cabra acquired for that purpose. The present Instituto de Enseñanza Secundaria, created on 2 February 1847, continues its history, and from this long trajectory a pedagogical, documentary and artistic heritage has survived that is unusual among teaching establishments in Spain.

The natural history collections (botany, zoology, mineralogy, geology and palaeontology) formed for a long time the main part of a centenary educational museum, which grew through purchases and donations from pupils, former pupils and residents of the town. Over the years that museum lost prominence, but renewed interest in nature helped its recovery.

The project for the current museum received the approval of the Junta de Andalucía in 2002 for its registration in the Register of Museums, with the support of Cabra town council and a grant from the PRODER II programme to rehabilitate the building. A three-storey block with a basement was fitted out between the inner courtyard, Calle Pepita Jiménez and the square that bears the institution's name. The museum opened with the 2007–2008 school year to display the institution's legacy permanently.
