About the museum
The museum occupies the Casa de la Tercia, a building erected between 1792 and 1795 as a store for grain, seed and oil, where ecclesiastical tithes and other Crown revenues were centralised. After the Mendizábal land sales of 1841 it passed into private hands and lost its original function; in the 20th century it served as an inn and, during the Civil War, as a prison. The town council leased it from 1960, bought it in 1984 and renovated it.
The museum opened in 1999 on the first floor and was entered in the Andalusian Museum Register as the Museo Histórico de Baena by an order of 7 February 2000. In 2010 the building was rehabilitated as the museum's home, which reopened in February 2011. Its arcaded courtyard stands out, decorated with a trompe l’œil of garlands and balustrades.
The route is chronological, beginning with prehistory (Room I) and ending in a gallery of illustrious people from Baena, with documents from the early modern and modern periods (Room XII). Three collections are unique: the Iberian-Roman votive group from the southern sanctuary of Torreparedones, with anthropomorphic and anatomical stone votive offerings; the Iberian-Roman numismatic collection, with coins from many mints and from almost all the emperors; and the large-format Roman statuary, with the seated statues of Augustus, Caligula or Claudius and Livia. Room XII displays a facsimile of the Cancionero de Baena.
