About the museum
The museum occupies a former olive oil factory in Cabra, a modernist building from 1913 that is a good example of the industrial architecture of the period. The Pallarés company, of Catalan origin, began working olive oil in the town around 1900, and the building later served as a warehouse and oil factory until activity ceased in 1976. The family that acquired the premises opened the museum in 2000.
The visit is organised in three rooms. The first displays replicas of the Roman amphorae in which oil from Baetica was transported, photographs of the former factory and panels on the Mediterranean cultures that produced olive oil. The second brings together 242 lithographed tin cans made between 1917 and 1975.
The third room is the most important: mills and presses from different periods, including a large beam press (prensa de viga y quintal) of oak and limestone from the 17th century, as well as a collection of earthenware jars and a cellar with 69 trujales, 3.5 metres deep, with a capacity of 1,250,000 kg of oil. The museum also includes a section on esparto grass.
