About the museum

The Museo Arqueológico de Cabra was created by ministerial order on 15 January 1973 and is the oldest local museum in the province of Córdoba. It was founded to preserve finds from the municipal area, including those from the Villa del Mitra, and was initially housed in the town hall. In 1984 it moved to an early 20th-century building that had once housed a branch of the Banco de España and is now the Casa de la Cultura.

The entrance is through a wrought-iron gate flanked by four columns of red Cabra marble. Most of the ground floor is organised around the Patio de Columnas, a square courtyard with ten columns of veined red marble and a multicoloured stained-glass ceiling. The pieces come from excavations at the Villa del Mitra and La Veleña, from chance finds, surface collections, donations and purchases. They are arranged chronologically, from the Palaeolithic to recent times.

Highlights include Roman sculptures, such as a sleeping Eros and an image of Dionysus, and a replica of the Mitra Tauróctono sculpture, whose original is kept in the Museo Arqueológico Provincial de Córdoba. Also on display are several Roman mosaics, ceramics, coins and a fine collection of prehistoric stone tools. The collection of Tartessian vessels, which has a room of its own, is also important. The museum closed at the end of 2008 for a major restoration and reopened on 28 February 2015.
