About the museum
The Museo Histórico Local de Monturque was created to protect and conserve the historical heritage of the municipality and to make it known through exhibition. It was made possible with the support of the town council and the work of the Archaeology and Bricklaying modules of the “Torre del Castillo” Trades House (Casa de Oficios, a vocational training centre), and it opened its doors in December 2007.
It is located on the Paseo de San Mateo, a spot with panoramic views of the town, which is a starting point for visiting other nearby sites, such as the Roman cisterns (Cisternas Romanas), the medieval castle, the church of San Mateo and the Los Paseíllos site. Its holdings come from chance finds during urban works, house building and farm work, as well as from excavations carried out in the town.
The route begins with an introduction to archaeology and a timeline with graphics and images. It then presents fossils, Palaeolithic and Neolithic tools, Chalcolithic materials (hand mill, sickle elements, loom weights and handmade pottery), Iberian pottery and Greek imported pottery, and a broad Roman section with building elements, grave goods, oil lamps and coins. This is followed by Islamic “verde y manganeso” pottery, late medieval household tableware and some objects from the early modern period.
